3P1 Case Study.
Bluetooth Medical Maths.

We developed a custom medical sensor on a Bluetooth target. The sensor works out its orientation and uses custom sensors to take readings from the human body. Based on these readings, movements are suggested to the user to help deal with muscular pain and/or injuries.

This involves some complicated processing on the sensor platform to keep the customer IP secret.

“The app can be used by clinicians to develop longer term care plans.”

The maths involved includes filtering and frequency selection on multiple channels from multiple sensors. The results are then sent to a cell phone over Bluetooth, which displays movements to the user. Over the longer term, the app records user activity when using the device, which can be used by clinicians to develop longer term care plans.

Our work involved bringing up the MCU platform, generating all the Bluetooth parameters, carrying out the DSP on the MCU, characterising battery life, and being involved in SDLC conversations, risk assessment, and contributing to the end customer ISO13485 accreditation for the product. The Zephyr OS was specified by the customer, and was used to great effect to speed development. Rather than the couple of week we would have budgeted for OTA update historically, using Zephyr on the nRF5340 platform reduced this to two lines of text(!).

We were able to deliver the customer requirements quickly and effectively by leveraging these technologies.
